I started reading Ecclesiastes today, and I have to tell you, this first chapter made me belly laugh!! It starts out with, "Everything is meaningless, says the teacher, completely meaningless!" How many of you have felt like that? How many of you have questioned the point of life? We seem to go in circles, doing the same things day in and day out. Generation after generation- history repeating itself over and over! Funny that they felt the same way over two thousand years ago!
Ecclesiastes 1:9-11 says, "History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. 10. Sometimes people say, 'Here is something new!' But actually it is old; nothing is ever truly new. 11. We don't remember what happened in the past, and in the future generations, no one will remember what we are doing now."
Isn't that the truth! What goes in history books, will be of one person's perspective. It will be as accurate as they remember it, and for most of us, who will never make a "name" for ourselves, we will never be spoken of. So what is the point?
Ecclesiastes 2:14-16 says, "For the wise can see where they are going, but fools walk in the dark. Yet I saw that the wise and the foolish share the same fate. 15. Both will die. So I say to myself, 'Since I will end up the same as the fool, what's the value of my wisdom? This is all so meaningless!' 16. For the wise and the foolish both die. The wise will not be remembered any longer that the fool. In the days to come, both will be forgotten."
This teacher that writes of these things was truly miserable! Not understanding the meaning of life! Many people feel this when they live a life separated from God! Are you still living in this desperation? If you are, when will you start saying "YES" to God? When you live with the dread of the inevitable fate of death. Then there really isn't anything to live for. When you are filled with the joy of the Lord and knowing that our Savior Jesus Christ died for us, and that He is going to bring us before His Father in Heaven when our time is up here! Then there is so much to live for!
Ecclesiastes ends like this, "But, my child, let me give you some further advise: Be careful, for writing books is endless, and much study wears you out. 13. That's the whole story, here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey His commands, for this is everyone's duty. 14. God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad."
Our lives are a prelude to Heaven! We are getting prepared for eternity. To sing God's praises. To march in God's army! To cook in the kitchen to serve the endless buffet presented for every meal. We will all be doing something to make our glorious Heaven a little better.
I don't know about you, but I want to be the one that asks a stranger if they need ride! Versus the grumpy guy on the corner screaming at everyone!
Until next time:
Numbers 6:24-26
24. May the Lord bless you and protect you!
25. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you!
26. May the Lord show you His favor and give you HIs peace!
